NOTTINGHAM’S LARGEST INDEPENDENT FAMILY RUN COAL MERCHANTS FOR OVER 70 YEARS
The business was started by J S Scattergood on Acton Road in Arnold over 70 years ago. He sold the business to the Tolley family. They later purchased the Redgate’s Business and yard on Church Street in Arnold. The Redgate’s had been selling local coal from Gedling coal mine since before the Second World War. So the yard as it is today was established.
In 1994 Ray and Sue Hawkins took over the business. In 1998 Ray won the East Midlands Coalman of the Year award after being nominated by his customers. This was the last year the awards were held. Today the family continue to take great pride in the quality of fuels they supply and the prompt and reliable service they offer.
Ray or Sue are always pleased to advice customers about the correct fuel for their appliance or discuss any queries related to the Coal Trade.
Family Run
Scattergoods are a family run Coal and Smokeless Solid Fuel Merchant and are members of the Coal Merchants Federation.
Diploma Merchant
A Diploma Approved Coal Merchants since 1995 a sign of good quality products and first class service.
Loose or Pre-Pack
50kg open sacks for bunkers, coal sheds etc or in 20kg heat sealed pre-packed bags for convenient storage.

- EXTRAS - We also stock logs, kindling, firelighters, charcoal and various fireside accessories.
- DELIVERY - Monday to Friday within a 4 1/2 Hour period. Saturday delivery to selective areas only (please enquire).
- CASH & CARRY- If you prefer, you can collect your prepacked fuel.
- PAYMENT - We accept payment by cash or most major debit cards
Private customers
Deliveries are made using our own modern fleet built to our specifications regarding size and body type to accommodate today’s built up areas, village lanes and narrow drives.
Business customers
We welcome trade enquiries from garages and shops for coal & solid smokeless fuels in 20kg pre-packed bags, as well as logs, kindling, firelighters, bio fuels & barbeque charcoal.
